There are various elements that contribute to a captivating and comfortable dining space, however, the item that you and your guests will directly interact with on a regular basis is your furniture. How can we select dining furniture that fosters great meals and lingering conversations?

A table that is too small or too big for the area will result in a room that is awkward and uncomfortable

Space: During the scoping process, the best interior designers will ask you to focus on your dining table as one of the main features of the room. Consider the number of family members and guests that you hope to seat at the table and calculate table size assuming that each person needs around 24 inches of elbow space. A table that is too small or too big for the area will result in a room that is awkward and uncomfortable. When possible you want at least 36 inches from the edge of your table to the walls and surrounding furniture allowing enough space for circulation while guests are seated. If your ideal table size is too big for the room consider a design that extends or has breadboard ends, also remember that pedestal bases will give you extra flexibility for adding additional chairs.

Smooth wood table tops are prone to drink rings and marble will etch and scratch

Materials: There is a myriad of table top material options: wood, metal, glass, concrete, natural stone, composite surface and more. Consider the makeup of your typical gatherings when you select a material. Smooth wood table tops are prone to drink rings and marble will etch and scratch, while a tempered glass surface will clean easily, won’t stain and is scratch resistant. Weathered or reclaimed wood will hide signs of wear and will patina over time. Every material has pros and cons, your experienced interior design professional will be able to steer you in the right direction.

The size of a dining chair can vary significantly,

Seating: Once you have determined your dining table you can select chairs to accompany it. The size of a dining chair can vary significantly, so make sure that you select a size the fits your typical guest comfortably and also fits around the table. If you are purchasing armchairs, make sure that you know the arm height and have verified that it fits under the dining table. Some dining chairs can be very heavy, keep this in mind if you have children or entertain guest who may struggle to move cumbersome seat. Lastly, as with the dining table, we should choose our chair materials carefully. If you enjoy long lingering meals, then by all means find a comfortable upholstered dining chair, but do keep your company in mind as you look at upholstery textiles. For easy maintenance consider leather, commercial treated textiles or even wool which is inherently stain resistant. Do you have young kids? Consider a luxury vinyl or removable slipcovers that can be washed. Consult your favorite design professional for help specifying.

Bon appétit!
